How to Maintain Your EV Charger During the Rainy Season

The rainy season in Nigeria is one of the toughest operating environments for any electrical equipment, and EV chargers are no exception. Heavy downpours, humidity, flooding, lightning, and unstable grid conditions can all combine to put charging hardware under real stress. The good news is that modern chargers, when properly installed and maintained, are designed to handle exactly these conditions. Here is a practical guide to keeping yours running reliably all season long.

First, inspect the installation. A charger that was professionally installed with proper IP-rated enclosures, weather-sealed conduits, and correct cable management will generally shrug off heavy rain. If you notice water pooling around the wallbox or pedestal, exposed wiring, cracked insulation, or rust forming on connectors, call a qualified electrician immediately. Do not use a charger that has visible water ingress.

Second, keep connectors clean and dry. Even chargers rated for outdoor use benefit from a quick wipe-down of the connector and cable before each plug-in. Moisture on connector pins is a leading cause of charging faults and, in worst cases, can damage the vehicle's charging inlet. If your charger has a connector holster, always seat the connector in it when not in use.

Third, protect against power surges. Nigerian storms frequently cause voltage spikes and grid instability that can damage sensitive charging electronics. A quality surge protection device, properly rated for the charger's power level, is one of the cheapest and most effective investments you can make. For commercial and fleet installations, consider a UPS or voltage stabilizer on the supply line.

Finally, schedule a pre-season service. At Cedric Clean Energy Solutions, we offer seasonal charger inspection and maintenance contracts that cover visual checks, electrical testing, firmware updates, connector replacement where needed, and a full cleaning of the unit. Most issues we find during pre-season inspections are minor and cheap to fix. The few that we catch early are the ones that would otherwise have caused downtime at the worst possible time. With the right installation, a few minutes of weekly care, and an annual service, your EV charger will perform reliably through every rainy season for many years to come.
